Education
I believe in creating a society in which education is a right for all, from early childhood and throughout the life course. I believe in education that not only serves the economy but also serves society. For me, Labour is the party of education. We remember the great strides this country made following the introduction of free secondary education. A strong and well-funded education system at all levels offers the best chance for economic recovery and renewal in this generation too. Addressing adult literacy and second-chance education are crucial. At a time when funding is being cut across all areas of social spending I make the case for protection of education spending at all levels, primary to fourth-level. We should have a National Forum to address the issue of church patronage of schools, as change is inevitable.
